since rewatching ET in powderhorn park a few weeks ago, i've had this idea brewing in my head. the glowing heart scene reminded me of no one other than jesus himself! tonight after drawing some doodles for my roommates i decided to flesh this idea out until the bitter end. not bad for watercoloring with 99 cent roseart watercolors.

DIY - Sewing Jar

here's what you'll need:

a jar with lid
some stuffing
fabric larger than the size of the lid
glue (hot glue, super glue, liquid nails)

step one:

place fabric and stuffing over the screw on cap minus the lid. adjust accordingly.

step two:

cover the lid with glue on the top side, place inside the screw on top. then add glue to the bottom and tuck in excess fabric.

... wait for it to dry and you're finished! how easy was that?

fill with sewing goodies (seam ripper, tiny scissors, thread, bobbins, etc) and give it to a friend or keep it for your self. perfect for on-the-go crafting and mason jar enthusiasts alike!

these have been on the back of my mind... the sculptures, i mean. i'm in the ever-slow process of building my new bike (dubbed bicyclit) and i figured that a cunt would be the perfect figurehead to my trek frame. i made the top one at 4am during a productive all-nighter. a few hours later i went downstairs to bake it and then to make tatertots for breakfast. i forgot to check on it and i melted it! so then i proceeded to make another... and here is the final product.

i bought this dress at savers a while back, but it's obviously pretty big and bulky. however, i couldn't turn it down due to the awesome floral pattern and the amazing handpainted ceramic buttons...

what was i going to make from the dress? i knew immediately, a nice tiny vest and maybe a matching skirt from the excess fabric. here's an in-progres shot

and the final product! i used one of my favorite buttons (pictured above) to be the clincher of the vest.

after debating for a while i decided that a matching skirt would be over kill... and there was so much of the fabric! the idea then sparked to make curtains. the best part is that the curtain that's on the door has a ginormous pocket on it for secret treasures.

HAPPY MAYDAY

in minneapolis we do mayday right... weather be damned. today i froze my ass off waiting and watching the hotb mayday parade. then i went home, changed my clothes, made some coffee and headed back out to perderhern (powderhorn) park to freeze my ass off some more and watch the ceremony. while i was hoping for sunshine and nice enough weather to wear a pretty dress, i still managed to have a good time. and now i can say that there ain't no mayday like a minneapolis mayday cause a minneapolis mayday don't stop (for snow flurries).

i've also started a new tradition of making some personal resolutions during mayday. i gave my self 9 easy goals to accomplish by fall, including restarting my failed 365 project.

later, inspired by a friends twitter i drew up a little something, something tonight after spending the night-in in order to warm-up...

not sure what i want to do with it yet (maybe a linocut, patches?) or if i'll do anything with it at all, but it was nice to sit and doodle something for 20 minutes.

today i had: a cup of iced coffee at work,
came home and had a vault,
then made a pot of kona coffee,
went to a meeting completely pressed,
and afterwards had another vault.

midway through all this madness i came up with and started a new cross-stitch pattern!
i've almost finished the first line (3 letters to go!) and then there's probably a million stitches left.
hopefully i can keep plugging away and won't lose steam like i did on my last 3 projects.

there's gonna have to be a lot more caffeine in my future either way! onward christian soldiers!

i love today! not because it was st patricks day, but because of all the awesomeness that was flowing my way. at work during my 6 hour shift i received from my coworkers:

i woke up this morning feeling slightly disgruntled at all the International Women's Day well-wishing occurring over my dashboard. i was upset that instead of large rallies and marches there was just online recognition and articles by white-socialist-men-who-just-don't-get-it spamming my social networking sites.

after i while i headed out and went to Peace Coffee for a pourover and some time to read CUNT. i ate chili, drank coffee, read, and listened to the tunes of Coco Rosie & Dark Dark Dark. after a couple of hours i decided to leave and stop by saver's on my way home. i ran into my friend Hallie as she was loading up her newly thrifted couch and then went inside to wander.

at this point of the day, i decided that i was going to celebrate IWD afterall. i headed towards the tapes section and was set on getting a cassette or two of music by women. and i picked up these:

after that i wandered over to the grab bag section looking for a purpletagged (50% off) score. in the office supplies i managed to find a bag of cards and postcards ... ALL FEMALE / FEMINIST BASED! at least 150 of them for 1.50$

and i finally found a pair of pants in my size and black for relatively cheap... unfortunately they were made by MILEY CYRUS. well not by her specifically, but more likely the women of vietnam (đoàn kết sisters!)

i spent the rest of the night at a meeting with some pretty radical women and then hanging out with everyone at an IWD show.

today after a hyper-caffeinated day at work, i took advantage of the beautiful weather and finally went to bought an SD card for Lenny... And so begins my 365 day adventure! i will take a photo a day for the next year in order to learn more about my Olympus Pen and all it's wonderful functions. you can follow along here or i might post a recap here on the blog once a week.

... and to make life more exciting, my coworker has offered to handover a bunch of 669 polaroid film he found at his place. we're also negotiating him selling me his holga and instant back once the next pay period rolls around, i love working at my co-op.

this photo makes me ache for summer! 4AM bike rides to st paul and back. staying up 'til 6AM and then sleeping through the heat of the day. late night walks around the park with tillymonster and backyard BBQs. ROOTBEER. color me over winter; two more months until spring!

if all goes according to schedule, my olympus PEN should be arriving in the mail tomorrow. it's my day off so i'll be camping out on the front door until the UPS driver comes. and it's about damn time, i ordered it back in November through pictureline and it was back ordered. silly me wanted the pretty white/tan combo! i waited until last month before finally canceling my order with them (i even knew the phone person by first name!). i then ordered it through amazon, and bam! i got an e-mail saying it was back ordered for 10-14 days. UGH! i just wanted my pretty camera.

fast forward to Tuesday and while at solidarity rally for Wisconsin, i got an e-mail on my phone saying it was going to be shipped! just in time because earlier in the day i had considered canceling my order, but didn't have time.

hopefully tomorrow will kick off my 365 photo challenge, HURRAH!

an impromptu hangout sesh turned into LETS GO TO SAVERS AND THEN GO TO TARGET FOR DISCOUNTED VALENTINES CANDY. at savers i found this cute little box in the camera section.

i opened it and find that not only is it a camera, but 2 rolls of unopened film! i toted it around the store until we were ready to head out. we then ran to target where i spent 8$ on toy story and other valentine cards, and only one box of candy! i thought of purchasing batteries for the camera, but didn't want to spend a lot on a large pack that was near the checkout. i figured i would just have to wait and then buy a pack tomorrow at the dollar store.

once we got pack to the dollhaus, i opened the box and started examining the camera. it still had film & batteries in it! i started to snap a few photos and low & behold, it worked. i can't wait to play around with it more in the day time. the funny thing is, i always thought these cameras were stupid when you could buy them in the stores, but for six dollars i couldn't be more excited.

on Saturday, I volunteered to help with the annual Women's Prison Book Project pancake breakfast. unfortunately, there was no second rush and we ended up with a lot of excess batter. since i hate wasting food i offered to take as much as i could which resulted in me bringing home ONE GALLON OF PANCAKE BATTER. my roommates helped me cake-i-fye the mixture since i seem to be no good at cooking them. towards the end holly started making weird shapes like unicorns, and uteri, and minnesota. and now our freezer holds a gigantic pile of pancakes to be eaten at will. hallelujah.

i did handmade gifts for most of my family: an embroidery for my mom, a bookmark for my grandma, and shown in pieces above, a handstitched tractor plush for my grandpa. i worked on most of these while watching Dexter on netflix. i'm horribly addicted! overall each episode is pretty mundane, but the last 2 minutes of each show always ends in epic cliffhangers. i started season 3 last night, i'm so glad i don't have to wait each week like everyone else! i often watch an episode and the first 10 minutes of the next before going to bed, that way i don't have to be left in suspense, haha.

i picked up the USA bulletin board at a thrift store back home this week and stuck it in our kitchen as a "community bulletin board". it was missing a little something, something so i started methlab monday a little early (see also: sunday at 2:30AM) and voila! we already have a few fun events up there like Propagandhi at the Triple Rock and Chew & Swallow Gastrointestinal Circus. Not to mention a lovely note from our friends at RAN thanking us for letting them use our kitchen to prepare for our BBQ celebration today!

i'm all moved in to my new haus, and still don't have internet. molly just moved in and holly will be moving in shortly. soon we will have a fullhaus! i've been keeping busy by mainly working a lot and doing little projects here and there... for example, i decorated the crafthutch on monday!

if tape/glue is sticky. and knives/scissors are sharp. then pens & markers would be.....? so far the best we've come up with is ink.

that's all for now folks! i need to find some recipes on okra before i head out and enjoy the day.

i know i haven't updated in what seems like a century, but i do sorta almost have an excuse...

i'm moving!

for reasons that are unimportant, i'm moving across the street from my current place. what does that mean for guerill[a]rtfare? a blog hiatus* for the time being. once i officially move in i won't have internet for quite some time. so i'm going to enjoy the rest of my summer and spend it in my new backyard with my beautiful puppy and wonderful friends and i'll be back sometime around fall! (hopefully with some big news!)

but i'm not going to leave you hanging! here's a peak into the wonderland of my backyard.. and my tillymunster! my how she has grown!

it's been a while since i've been able to partake in a methlab monday. partly due to craftivities being moved to wednesday night hardtimes and partly due to sheer laziness. today, however, was a new day, in fact, it was my only day off this week. the only day where i don't have to be at work, a meeting, or a work meeting all week. so it was decided that today would be an all day craft-a-thon. i got up around noon (sleeping in is awesome) and ran and bought some toilet paper. made a few texts to get the crew together and by 3:30 the gang was all here!

after a short span of chit-chatting, we started to get our craft-on. while i didn't actually accomplish a granny square or anything of the crocheted manner, i did manage to get my slipstitch to look good. i continued to craft after some of my friends left, and then more came back and i continued to craft! at this point i switched to xstitching to continue working on my very botched edition of this pattern.

yesterday i started week one of four weeks of weaving though Experimental College (EXCO). in a mere three hours we were able to make and string a frame loom, kinda like the one above. that's a pretty big accomplishment considering i finally managed to crawl out of bed around 2pm, haha. next week we're going to start weaving, and i offered to bring the coldpress to They Won't Find Us Here gallery where we're working out of. i'm still trying to decide what would be a good first project that won't be too difficult. most of my ideas are pretty extravagant right now.

through EXCO i'm also reading We Are An Image From the Future, on the greet revolt of 2008. the first discussion date is set for sunday, and i'm about halfway though the reading. the best part is that the reading group is taking part on 3 fronts: one group in minneapolis, a group in santa barbara, and all together online: http://greekrevolts.wordpress.com/. feel free to follow along!

and today i'm picking up a kombucha scoby from one of my coworkers. i'm excited to try and make some kombucha, especially since GT has been taken off the shelves for being actually alcoholic. and while i love to buy local products, Unpeeled Kombucha is only good if you're getting the Spicy Mojito variety. i think the timing is perfect for me to start brewing my own! i hope this works at as gateway down the long dark path of fermentation, haha.

detroit was an excellent experience and i haven't even begun to process all that occurred in the past week. hopefully soon i can reflect and write down what i've learned. the ussf taught me more on personal levels than it did on any sort of organizational level. overall, i'm grateful to have had these experiences and look forward to more eye opening occurrences in the future.

i found this horrible excuse for a teeshirt at Savers a few weeks ago, and i immediately had to have it. I let it sit in my haus for a few days before i knew exactly what to do with it. my friend quynhippeg is leaving for seattle on tuesday and this was the perfect gift for her... once i gave it a make over.

and this was her response when i gave it to her this morning. she said it was the most embarrassing gift she had ever received! well second after receiving an actual mustache in the mail.

wednesday myself and 10 other radical kids got dressed up in our sunday best and walked right into cargill's lake office mansion headquarters which houses 20 of their top execs. we gave the poor receptionist some decoy about being in a student organization and darted immediately for the staircase. 5 of sat down and proceeded to lock ourselves to the banister and each other... oh did i mention on the other end of each of these chains were giant speakers blasting the sound of cargill's supply chain? giant fucking speakers welded shut and keys thrown away. photos and video were taken and half of our crew left.

the noises of chainsaws & rainforest took over the room and the receptionist tried to shut the doors, but still cargill employees managed to fill the room. the police were called and i swear, it was the most exciting thing the minnetonka police have ever seen. instead of harassing us, they'd walk around us admire our equipment. "oh you're locked to the banister, and then u-locked together... then chained to the soundbox?" said the look on their faces. the only thing that didn't go like clockwork in our scheme was that one of the soundboxes stopped working 3 minutes into lockdown. eventually the police taped the box shut in order to muffle the noise, but it still rang loud.

by the time it was time for the police to read us our rights and what we were going to be charged with (unlawful assembly), the sergeant read it off a laminate sheet of paper and his hands were shaking. the poor small town police didn't want to arrest us! he gave us 10 minutes. we didn't unlock. he charged us with unlawful assembly and gave us 5 minutes to disperse. we didn't unlock. by 12:10pm, wednesday afternoon we were under arrest. however it took them another two hours to finally start cutting us out because the local police didn't have the equipment to do so, and neither did the minneap. department. it wasn't until the sheriff's department came did the start to cut us out of our gear. at that time the room was swarming with cargill employees and 20 police officers all standing around watching.

we were arrested and spent four hours in jail before being released on bail. by this time there was 39 news articles surfing the web and fox 9 news was waiting for us when we got out. the next day we make DEMOCRACY NOW HEADLINES. and seriously, the crew we ran with was phenomenal! we were able to end business at usual at cargill headquarters within 35 seconds and stay strong for 4 hours. i bet they'll think twice about adopting a sustainable palmoil policy.

i just stumbled upon these on etsy and immediately fell in love with the well combined detailing of embroidery, painting, & sewing on these slightly deranged whimsical dollies. traditionally folky, but yet dark & modern (a tim burton twist) - the best of both worlds.

my mom likes to say that when i go thrifting that i don't buy weird things, i buy the really weird things. case in point? a framed goat sculpture. as soon as i saw it i knew i had to buy it, paint it gold, and hang it in our living room... and voila!

since i already had the spraypaint out i decided to transform this ice sign i picked up while living with my landlord's dad (don't ask) and turn it into a life-sized polaroid. shazam!

last night i was able to fulfill one of my goals from when i was 15 by seeing THE SOVIETTES play for the first time ever. i never got my license which kept me from seeing them in highschool. the one show i almost made it to (but didn't) ended up being their final show. talk about double bummer. yaaay for reunion shows & rarities LPs.

... now if only i can make it to a dark dark dark show before the end of the century.

today it reached 64 degrees in the minneap! for those of you not familiar with minnesota, anything above 20 degrees midmarch is basically shorts weather. i was abrubtly awoken around 8:30 this morning (7:30 predaylight savings) after going to bed around 4 am. i rolled out of bed at 9:30 ate breakfast and starting my coffee regiment for the day before i headed to work. i had a 2 shot depth charge followed by a 2 shot mocha (with coldpress instead of milk). i sat down finished reading Assata Shakur's autobiography while listening to BK One & Brother Ali's newest albums. tilly and i played outside for a while then i biked to work and drank 12 more oz of cold press. halfway through my shift i was notified via email that i won this gem on ebay!

now i sit here drinking a vault and mentally preparing myself to head to cambridge tomorrow. i'm going to spend the next few days relaxing, socializing tilly, and crafting... goodbye minneapolis, hello boredom!

yesterday i went to the mall (of america) and was quite successful in my findings for once. i got an "outfit" and other fun things... like a buzz lightyear lego keychain. i don't go to the mall often, but everytime i have since the toystory edition legos have come out, i've checked the lego store for this exact item, and everytime i've been dissapointed.... until yesterday that is.

i also managed to find yellow hairdye which is somewhat impossible to find. the last bottle i found was at north country coop my first week of classes at the University. the coop shutdown a few months later and i hadn't found another bottle in the three years i've been living in minneapolis... until yesterday that is.

now all i need to find is a pair of these pj's in size 12 for boys and my life will be complete. seems sizing only runs to 8.

and just 'cause... more lightyear goodiness!

working on a few new pieces, embroidery & xstitch. i have the entire week off so hopefully i will be productive! i also went and watched minnesota's first men's flat track derby team play saturday night at cheapskate... a very ghetto rollerrink. the guys ranged from 21 to 50+ i swear! and were ridiculously clumbsy, but overall it was a great time! can't wait until next month when they pick team names instead of being squads black&blue. totally a blacksquad fan btdubz.

molly & viki came over today to do a photoshoot in mine & kelly's basement for molly's photography class. we played with lights & the aperture to create what will hopefully be some bomb photos. i can't wait for molly to develop the film on tuesday!

it was also perfect use of the basement that we recently cleaned out. nothing like trying to make the basement more artful and then getting to do a fun project right away. thanks girrrrls.

recently my bloggg has gotten more visitors thanks to a post on MrxStitch! which in turn doubled the number of downloads of my Feminist Cross Stitch Pattern. A wonderful downloader / fellow xstitcher, Ann, sent me in the above image of her rendition of the pattern. She also said that she's gonna teach her sister to xstitch using this same pattern!

it's a great way to learn to stitch and get the feminist talk going. my plan is to invite over some art circle friends in the future and start talking about issues that concern us, & this is a good introduction project.

tonight i'm going to not craft (boo!), but organize my basement into a more efficient art studio (yay!).

my very own, one of a kind, homemade vegan chili recipe!

{ ingredients }

4 cups of bulk black beans
peppers: green, red, habanero, jalapeno
1 red onion
1 can of black olives
a tomato or two
1 pack of extra firm tofu
1 giant can of crushed tomatoes (28 oz)
10 oz frozen corn
pineapple

{ spices }

cumin
cayenne
paprika
oregano
chili powder

1. soak black beans in chili powder / water over night. { info on soaking beans }

2. cook beans in chili powder / water until soft (usually >45 minutes)

& cut vegetables (excluding pineapple). i get a lot of what's in my chili in the free bin at my the coop i work at.

3. once beans are cooked, add in the stewed tomatoes, corn, & vegetables.

3.5 generously add spices to taste.

break apart tofu block into pieces and add to the mixture.

4. put in a slow cooker or continue to cook onstove top until all is cooked. you might want to cook the vegetables before hand if you don't like raw onions, or raw habanero peppers (!!! extremely hot !!!). i usually don't in order to keep the peppers and onion crunchy.

5. once all is cooked, add in the pineapple. it makes a nice sweet contrast with the spiciness of the rest of the chili.

the last time i made this chili and it fed all my art friends and then my haus for the rest of the week.

lately i've been in a funk where if i'm not playing laser tag i'm in bed no later than one. i don't want to blame it on the weather, but something has been keeping me down as of late. after a sketchy interaction last night in our backyard, a bunch of friends came over tonight to search our basement for treasure. a kid dived into our crawlspace to pull out an old empty box. no bling, no drugs, no AK47s, but an old janky box.

i guess what i'm trying to say is i should leave the haus more often and have some of that good ol' human interaction.

tonight howard zinn died at the age of 87 from a heart attack

& my heart actually aches. he was a big inspiration growing up.

i've read a lot of his books, but never finished reading A People's History. one of my 22 goals by the time i turn 23 is to finish it now. i played laser tag again tonight for my 'party like it's my birthday' (my birthday was sunday) in his honor. instead of dedicating each round to mother russia i dedicated it to him and i kicked ass! one round i got first place out of 22 players and became an excellent sniper. totally preparing for inevitable armed revolution no doubt.

tonight consisted of making more whore patches (11 total, 4 different types) and redoing our Hippie Jihad screenprint. i love simple silk-screen printing. i also conspired for our coffee shop drawing up a sickle coffee cup and doing some other random doodles. i'll post pictures of the patches when i have some better lighting tomorrow and i might throw a few up on my etsy.

today was the first day of classes at the university of minnesota and my first (official) day as a college dropout. how does one spend their time when they don't have to go to class? get up early as fuck, drink way to much coffee, and protest General Mills & Cargill! today i was proud to be part of a 42 person caravan of twincities activists to take part in the bannering of general mills headquarters with the Rainforest Action Network. so after the overly-caffeinated party at our haus, kelly & i went back to cambridge for some relaxation and some thrift store shopping. the thrifting in mpls is few and far between and usually overpriced so i savor the times i get to go back and make a day out of it. it starts out by hitting up the wyoming, and then into isanti and finishing up by going to the local christian thriftstore in cambridge followed by the normal one and ending up in the co-op/coffee/used bookstore trio. love, love, love.

it was on clearance for $10! i'm excited to fill it with nice speakers and to get an analog record player to put in it. i'm also going to make it functionable with a split in the case of wanting to hook my laptop up to it. it will most likely go into my bedroom, or maybe the livingroom, and if all else fails & i don't like it i re-craigslist it.
